wii active and marathon training

As I wrote yesterday, I broke down and bought into the Wii hype of ‘Wii Active’, and plan to mix it into my marathon training plan. I don’t intend to focus too hard on the lower body workouts since I get a pretty good workout, but more on the upper body and ‘core’ exercises that it has to offer… It fits for me because its a cheap alternative to joining a gym, or buying all kind of additional gym equipment that ends up cluttering up my house (like weight benches, rowing machines, punching bags, etc).

I did a real good cardio boxing workout yesterday, and since then, my upper body and core muscles are killing me, I didn’t realize that doing something so simple (without the actual punching bag) could have such an impact .. maybe this will help me lose the additional weight and get me in better shape than I was last year. The funny thing is that I feel i’m in good cardio shape, but I was dying doing the boxing .. only after a few minutes, I guess I have a ways to go and I just don’t realize it. The last comment I have on using the Wii Active in my training is that you can say that you feel kind of foolish imitating doing actual activities in front of a TV, but it obviously works.. I’ll keep writing about the progress I make with it .. it should be interesting.

So today was my weekend wrap-up run of 10 miles at a 7:50-8:00/pace (considered my tempo run). I pretty much hit the goal, except for when I forgot to make a turn in one of the developments in the last 1 1/2 miles, adding another 3/4’s of a mile to my run (plus a ton of hills) … it was kind of scary, because like last summer when I got lost running outside of Chicago on a business trip, I came out of a road expecting to be in one place, and was in another, I actually had to stop and figure out exactly where I was. It wasn’t until I got back home that I realized I had screwed up the course. It was nice in the fact that it was a difference course, but I’ve run this development hundreds of times, just not in this direction, guess you have to learn the hard way. The run ended up being only .6 miles more than I expected because I cut out the final loop around my development because I knew I was over in miles, so it kind of worked out I guess.

I hit a new high in miles this week, just under 64 miles, which will be the max for me for a couple weeks. We’ll stay at this mileage with the intention of building speed into the runs now, it helps with both my endurance and my times, so it should be something different. Thats what I need, just gotta keep it new and fresh so i don’t lose interest!

Hopefully this awful weather will turn around this week, i’ve been waiting for the sun to come out, but it just won’t …
