I apologize to anyone trying to access the blog since yesterday who got an internal error, apparently my webhost made a change that I didn’t account for, so I had to make a fix to get things running again. The important thing is we’re back!

Speaking of being back, I managed to get out today and get a semi-workout in to slowly start rehabbing my sore quadriceps in my left leg. I only jogged 2 broken up miles, and walked for probably another 2 miles, but its better than nothing. The pain in my leg is now gone, which is a good thing, but I really need to take it easy for the next few days so I don’t re injure myself, which will set us further back from where we already are. The goal is to ease back into running, and not so much worry about speed and distance… it kind of means that my chances of improving my time at Steamtown in 4 weeks is probably not going to happen. I think I have to consider that its either I take it easy and run the race, or push it and miss the race due to injury, so i’ll take the former I guess.

I was thinking back to last weekend during the race and how this running injury started in the first place. I do recall that in mile 7-8 it started to get extremely sore, and stayed that way for the whole race, but then it subsided afterward. If you recall during the weeks working up to the marathon, I complained about my groin being sore, then my hamstring was sore, etc, so I think my leg was telling me that there was an issue. In reading more about this type of injury here and other places on the web, its caused by an imbalance of strength with the hamstrings and other muscles. It makes me think that since those muscles were so worked, that it caused this injury. I don’t think it would’ve strained as bad if I wasn’t so generally sore from the marathon itself (and took a day off afterward), which I feel masked the true fact that it was injured. I know that generally after a marathon, i’m sore all over for at least Monday into Tuesday, then by Wednesday it was feeling better but even when I finished running, the soreness seemed to have stuck around there.. maybe I should’ve taken the hint..

Regardless, I can only look back and try to learn from the experience. Fortunately this is the first ‘real’ sidelining injury i’ve had in over a year, so I’m not doing too bad. It may have just been all those high mile weeks in a row, without enough rest, who knows.

So i’m not sure what the running week looks like right now, i’m just keeping heat on it, stretching it and staying active on it (and watching what i’m eating!).. but again, not overdoing it. Hopefully it will continue improving and we can attempt a longer run next weekend.
