I had a decent run on Monday (as I wrote) until later in the morning when I started to come down with the symptoms of a cold. Monday night was brutal for me and Tuesday morning I was forced to cut my run short because I just didn’t feel good. It was the right thing to do. I’ve learned throughout all the years of training that just running when you’re not feeling great only prolongs your illness. So after struggling through the day on Tuesday, I started to feel okay by the end of the day, however when i woke up Wednesday morning, I felt even worse…. had to can the run for the day.
So I thought to myself that this is a heck of a way to start my training for the fall, but i was also thankful that it happened when it did. I hadn’t really been sick in a few years and if it was going to happen, now is the best time… So I ended up at the doctor on Wednesday night because my ear was starting to bother me as well, seems I have a slight ear infection going … so I got some antibiotic, got some rest and headed out this morning to get at least 6 miles in (and I did feel better when i woke up).
I’m hoping that the worst of this is over now, but we have to play it smart. As I wrote (and have learned), its better to take the day off and live to run another day then to push it when you’re sick and prolong the illness (this is true for injuries too). Its taken many years to finally be able to accept it, but I finally have.
So my advice? Don’t run when you’re sick … I hope we’re on track again to get training moving again.
