So since I can’t write about marathon training right now, because I can’t run due to my minor surgery, I thought I would share the experience of my surgery.
I was diagnosed with whats called “unspecified acute sinusitis” after having both a CT scan and another xray two weeks later, my ENT noted that my right maxilliary sinus was 2/3 full of fluid, which was causing my ears to block, nose to run, etc. This along with my allergies (which i’m getting shots for now) somehow built up and would probably never drain out of my sinuses. So the thought in this procedure was for the doctor to go in and drain my sinus out, and ensure there was no cyst or polyp or anything blocking my sinus up. So it was supposed to be local anesthia, short procedure, quick recovery … no big deal.
So I took off Thursday from running and headed down for my outpatient procedure at 6:15am. I got checked in by 6:30 and was in my bed waiting to be taken in by around 7am. The doctor came over and talked to me and told me exactly what he would be doing. He advised me that after looking at the xray better, I actually have an air pocket in my upper nose caused by my deviated septum, and that in addition to cleaning out the sinus, he was going to correct both that and my deviated septum ……….. WHAT! Yeah, thats a little more serious of a procedure than he had first told me about… At this point, I was heading in for my procedure, so I didn’t even have a choice or anything.
I was told that I went in about 7:35 and came out at 9am … I was groggy afterward and I couldn’t breath through my nose because I had packing up there. I also couldn’t see because I had to take my contacts out, it really sucked. So after they gave me a popsicle, I felt a little better and headed home, and thought it would be an easy recovery.
So Thursday I was screwed up because of the anethesia, but managed to work from the couch all day and actually got a decent amount of work done. My nose was draining blood for a few hours afterward, but by lunchtime the blood stopped and it was just fluid now … I didn’t need any pain pills or anything at that point, because there really was no pain, just the annoying packing stuck up in my nose (which is scheduled to come out tonight at 5pm)… I didn’t sleep very well because I had to keep my head elevated, but I did sleep a little bit despite the fact I had a sinus headache that was killing me due to the packing.
The plan was to get up and goto work on Friday, which I did (but probably should not have). I showered, keeping my nose dry and all, and headed out to work with my nose draining and all, wrapped up with scotch tape so it didn’t appear noticeable that I had something done. I really thought that I would be in better shape, but slowly declined all day and eventually left work at 3:30pm. Not being able to breath, or eat, or even think due to the crap in my face really didn’t make for a great day. So I got home and called it a weekend …
So Saturday I was supposed to goto New York on a project, but canceled it, there was NO WAY i would have made it. So after resting all day (and still working from home), I still managed to get some things done, and started to feel a little better by night time. I’m just not used to sitting around doing NOTHING all day but rest. But I did it.
I took some pain pills at night and passed out and actually slept decently last night. I can’t wait until 5pm to get this stuff out since its really the worst part of this whole procedure so far. I’m not sure what else I have to do once I get the packing out, but it can’t be this bad ….
So I hope to get back out running by Tuesday or Wednesday with the intention of still running the Chilly Cheeks next weekend, but we’ll have to see. It will all depend …
