adding speed to my 10 miler

My intention this week as I start to enter the second half of the training for my first fall marathon is to start building on the mileage i’ve worked up by adding some speed to my mid week runs. I’ve been running my Tuesday and Wednesday 10 milers at about an 8:20/mile pace the last few weeks, and although I pulled off an 8:05/mile pace last week, I pushed it to just under that to 7:55/mile this morning. The good thing is that it was subconscious and I didn’t feel myself working too much harder on it. Now tomorrow I add another mile to the midweek run by pushing it to 11 miles, although I have yet to decide how to add the extra mile, but we’ll figure it out… I’m not sure we’ll push the pace tomorrow as much as this morning, but my body will make that decision.

Welcome to anyone to came to my blog via the email sent by the nice folks at Via of the Lehigh Valley who are sponsoring the Lehigh Valley Health Network Marathon in September. I am running this marathon for a second time to help support programs for children with disabilities, like my daughter who has Down Syndrome … the programs that Via provides help to make sure that children like mine have the opportunity to be their best. The picture to the left is my favorite picture of me and my daughter prior to the Delaware marathon last year .. yep, she’s something, I love her to death and she is my number 1 fan (she’s probably my own fan, but you have to start somewhere I guess)!

Anyway, back to running .. so the weekend is expected to be the start of the humidity that i would have expected to see weeks ago. Saturday mornings temperature is supposed to be in the upper 60’s, which isn’t good. I guess proper preparation will be key to surviving this weekend, but its good to get acclimated now as we had into the dog days of August (where there is never a cool day).

That’s about it for now .. off to eat ice cream, this is the best time of year because I can eat whatever I want, in whatever quantity, and NOT GAIN WEIGHT! Its wonderful … 🙂
