I wrote yesterday about how dehydrated I was, and I have to say I felt pretty awful the rest of the day even though I continued to drink gallon after gallon of water, gatorade and everything in between. I decided to head to the pool and swim with my daughter for a bit yesterday as well, and although it was okay for the most part, my calves cramped up pretty bad, to the point I had to get out of the pool … and now they are really sore.
So then I got up this morning after feeling the soreness in my calves yesterday, and I could barely walk, and I honestly thought to myself if I was going to be able to run today. The feeling in my calves convinces me that I did a little too much hillwork yesterday .. and that i’m getting to the point of overtraining (possibly). I managed to get through my run this morning because they eventually stretched out, but now that i’ve rested again, they’re even more sore .. it really sucks. I may need to stretch them better (and keep them stretched), and take some ibuprofen and generally just stay off them. I was quite active yesterday doing several things, so its possible that I aggravated it.
So I headed out for another 11-12 miler today (finished with 11.35 miles), whatever I felt I could get in as long as I got in 11 … I felt terrible in the first 3 miles, and really thought I was going to have to bag the run altogether, but thankfully I didn’t have to because I started to get with it shortly thereafter. As to be expected, I was sweating profusely and by mile 6, started to feel terribly dehydrated again .. its not that terribly warm, so i’m not sure whats happening, but I had the dry mouth, fatigued feeling and my legs started to get sore.. I ran through it like one would expect, and hopefully I’ll recover with the reduction in miles the next few days as we go on vacation.
Its been funny the last 2 days where I haven’t seen that many fellow runners out .. it seems that during the week, all the recreational runners are out and about, but the weekends, they’re not. I don’t think I passed a single runner either day, maybe its too hot for them? I think this is the best time of year (minus the dehydration issues) ..
I head off the beach tomorrow, so my runs get easier and more enjoyable (with the change of scenery) .. i’m looking forward to it, I always enjoy running the boardwalk and the area around Wildwood, only problem is that it gets a bit crowded. There are lots of people like me who enjoy running down there, but I can handle it …
