So I was reading this thread on Runners World forums concerning the way that you calculate weekly mileage while training, and it forced me to take an interesting look at my miles … I generally calculate my weekly miles (that I post on the sidebar) using a Monday-Sunday model, but maybe I shouldn’t be and should be looking at it as mileage in-between days off .. lets see:
Fri 8/15 off
Sat 8/16 22 miles
Sun 8/17 12 miles
Mon 8/18 5 miles
Tue 8/19 9.25 miles
Wed 8/20 14 miles
Thu 8/21 8.25 miles
Fri 8/22 off
So if I take the above schedule, its 70.5 miles .. now to continue it ..
Sat 8/23 22 miles
Sun 8/24 12 miles
Mon 8/25 4 miles
Tue 8/26 8 miles
Wed 8/27 12 miles
Thu 8/28 8 miles
Fri 8/29 off
Sat 8/30 8 miles
Sun 8/31 14 miles
Up until Fri 8/29, this then calculates to wrapping up a 66 mile week just 9 days from the marathon … however if I look at it from the Monday to the Sunday, its marked as just a 44 mile week just 6 days from the marathon .. I guess in theory there really is no difference … its still the same amount of miles in the long run (no pun intended), its just a matter of how you WANT to look at it, right?
I guess I don’t plan on changing the way I look at it, because sometimes my schedule changes and I don’t get that Friday off to start recounting the miles, so in those cases, where do you start counting the mileage, whereas when you mark a Monday-Sunday, or Sunday to Saturday model, the days of the week don’t change. Its all too confusing, this is what I get for reading the forums I guess!
Believe it or not, its time to start checking the forecast for 9/7 and the Lehigh Valley Hospital Marathon .. its almost 10 days out, and according to the latest forecast, it looks like starting temps in the mid 50’s, with a high around 80. But there is one thing to consider. Hurricane Gustav is creeping around in the gulf coast region right now, it might take that many days to get up and around … could you imagine if that storm makes it up the coast just in time for the marathon? That wouldn’t be good, but wouldn’t deter us from running it, we’d just have to do it differently I guess.. My hopes is that it either doesn’t affect us, or if it does, hits either earlier or later than the marathon itself, but its something I have no control over, so we’ll just have to deal with it.
So I wrapped up another ‘cool’ run this morning with a distance of 12 miles .. its really the second to last double digit distance run i’ll have prior to the marathon on the 7th. I can’t believe the cool morning temperatures we’ve been getting here in the northeast, it feels like October, and its still August .. I was really tired during the run again, just like yesterday, but worked my way out of it .. I think its just the training is getting to me, the body is craving some R&R I guess, it will get it soon! Everything is sore, including my left groin again .. that reminds me that I almost had a feeling that I pulled something in my left groin, it was a tingly feeling up and down my whole thigh in about mile 9. It never came back to bother me until I was done it was a little sore … I don’t think its anything to worry about (i hope), so we’ll have to keep an eye on it. My goal right now is just to stay stretched as best as I can so I don’t stiffen up. I think thats why my runs are so rough first thing in the morning….
There is supposed to be a last minute 5K race in Kirby Park this weekend (on labor day), last minute because it was only noted in our local running site about 4 days ago … but i’m not sure if its going to come together in time. I don’t know if I’ll run it or not if it does come together, my thoughts are NOT to at this point, since its less than a week from the marathon, its not worth injuring myself so close to the marathon for a simple 3.1 miles .. maybe we’ll go down and volunteer or just to get the vibe of the race environment, who knows, I guess it will depend on how I feel ..
