I got a friendly email from the folks at the Lehigh Valley Hospital marathon for Via today, informing me that the course has been changed since last year. Apparently they got rid of Gary Ward hill, which if I recall from last year, kind of killed my excellent time … it was a tough hill, so I certainly won’t miss it. And the other big change is that we actually start the hospital out on Cedar Crest Blvd here in Allentown instead of at the center of the city… thats cool because that makes the starting line only 4 miles from my house. The only bad thing I think is that they added a half marathon to the schedule .. let me put my comment in contrast… I’ve run several marathons where they have the marathon, a relay and a half marathon and it gets congested (at least in the beginning). Either way, they want to boost support for the hospital and for the cause, which I think is excellent, and I guess I’ll deal with it. I just remember the Delaware marathon last year with all those people FLYING by all the time, it didn’t do anything for my moral.

So I am excited about the new course, at least its not the same old course from last year…

Training has been going pretty good despite the cold. We’re supposed to get some winter weather tonight into tomorrow morning so I adjusted my scheduled to add miles yesterday and today to make up for the possibility that I won’t get out tomorrow. If its just snow in the morning, i’ll probably head out to get something in, but who knows how much, but if its freezing rain (which is typical here in the valley), I’ll stay home, its too dangerous. I was happy that I got my first morning 6 miler in since October this morning, and it felt good, I think I can get back to doing it regularly like I used to. If only this weather would break …. (and no, i don’t care for treadmills)

Speaking of treadmills, I pass a large local gym on my morning runs and everytime I pass one, I always think about the better workout I get by working out in the cold then in the gym. This morning there was a big dude who got out of his car to go in the gym, and he acted like a little girl in the cold. I heard him say “god its cold, I gotta get inside” .. COME ON NOW, I thought to myself.. Well, everyone has their own way of working out, i’m just not a gym guy anymore. I’d rather face the cold..

I’m not sure that I wrote that I got the first 36 mile week in last week since October as well.. I actually did pretty good on Sunday, getting in just over 6 miles on only 5 hours of sleep (had to work overnight Saturday). I still felt good afterward and am looking forward to the longer runs now …

Gotta run though (no pun intended) …
